About Caritas Murang'a

We are the relief and development arm of the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a.

We were established in the year 2000, first as the Social Development Office and later on restructured into Caritas Murang’a in 2012. This was to align Caritas Murang’a to the national Directorate, Caritas Kenya, and ultimately with the international confederation, Caritas Internationalis. This repositioning, not only gave Caritas Murang’a a national and international outlook, but also a professional edge, anchored within international best practices, principles and standards in development and humanitarian work.

As an organization, Caritas Murang’a is guided by policies and ethos of the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a and the Catholic Social Teachings. As a faith-based organization, we work closely with communities of “people made poor,” improving their socio-cultural, political and economic livelihoods. We integrate a rights-based approach to development, facilitating local communities to gain power and voice to challenge systems and structures of oppression and bad governance, thereby enhancing their meaningful participation in championing the course for their individual and collective integral development.

Over the years, Caritas Murang’a has partnered with several institutions including:  CAFOD, CRS, FAO, ASARECA, Caritas Internationalis, Caritas Kenya, St. John Christian Community, UNDP/AmkeniWa Kenya, Aphia Plus Kamili, USAID, UKAID, AHADI (Agile and Harmonized Assistance for Devolved Institutions), URAIA, Kenya Red Cross Society, Cheshire Disability Services Kenya, The Nature Conservancy, AMREF, Government of Kenya and other Civil Society Organizations.

We have successfully implemented projects in agriculture, environmental conservation, advocacy and governance, emergency response, Orphans & Vulnerable Children, HIV/AIDs, livelihoods, humanitarian support, disability, water, hygiene and sanitation, and micro-credit and savings initiative.

Caritas Murang’a is situated at St. Mary’s Pastoral Centre, the secretariat of the Catholic Diocese of Murng’a. It lies 90 km North off Nairobi. The Diocese covers both Muranga and Kirinyaga Counties, which is approximately 4, 016 Km2 and an estimate population of 1.7 million people. 670, 000 of these are Catholic.
